Sir, Dmitri Trenin, director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, paints a grim picture of the Syrian war but embeds it in an inappropriate historical analogy (“Syria’s future lies in its neighbours’ hands”, February 10). Rather than resembling the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39, as he contends, Syria is more like the Balkans during the summer of 1914.
