Biography

Born in Boston, MA, she holds a Ph.D. in Politics from Brandeis University, an M.A. from the Fletcher School of International Law and Diplomacy, and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts at Boston. Her main interests and expertise are comparative politics in western and nonwestern societies, social structures, ethnicity, identity and politics (Sub-Saharan Africa, U.S., Caribbean, the Philippines, and the South Pacific), conflict analysis and conflict management in these regions. She has traveled extensively, and lived and worked in the South Pacific, the Caribbean, Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. She has been a consultant to the United Nations, the Life and Peace Institute, Uppsala, Sweden, the U.S. State Department/Africa Bureau, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). She is on the Board of Directors of the Albert Einstein Institution for the Study of Strategic Nonviolent Political Change, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is a former member of the Committee for Ethnic Affairs, Montgomery Country, Maryland.
