Applicants are required to submit proof of English language proficiency, regardless of citizenship.
All other applicants must provide English Proficiency Exam scores. Listed below are the English proficiency examinations that Mason accepts and the corresponding minimum score requirements and submission procedures:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A minimum score of 88 or higher with a minimum of 20 on each subsection on the internet-based exam, 230 or higher on the computer-based exam, and 570 or higher on the paper-based exam. Scores must be sent directly to GMU from the agency and can not be more than two years old. Our testing code is 5827.
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS): A minimum score 6.5 on the academic exam. Scores must be sent to GMU directly from the testing agency.
- Pearson Academic Test of English: A minimum score of 59.
All English proficiency scores are valid for two years from the test date. Official test scores must be provided directly from the testing agency. In general, you may use the institution code 5827 to send your scores to Mason. For IELTS, please make sure you have scores sent to the Mason Office of Graduate Admissions. It is not necessary to use the exact department code as test scores arrive to our institution electronically.

Applicants who have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university are considered to have met the English proficiency requirement. You are also considered to have met the English proficiency requirement if you have earned a degree from an accredited university in Canada (excluding Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Australia.
Applicants who have completed an English or English related Bachelors or Masters degree from an international instituion must meet the English proficiency requirement.
Applicants who have completed a Bachelors or Masters degree from an English-speaking international instituion must meet the English proficiency requirement.
