October 28, 2015 7:30pm through 11:30pm
Join the Center for Narrative & Conflict Resolution and the Open Discourse Project as we live-stream the Republican Debate on October 28th at the School for Conflict Analysis & Resolution at GMU. This event is open to students, faculty, and community members interested in learning more about the narrative dynamics at play in the discourse of both parties during the 2016 Presidential Campaign, and the effect these have on the quality of discourse in the US political sphere. Through a real-time narrative analysis of the conversations between candidates, participants will have an opportunity to learn more about how storylines operate and are mobilized in this space, and how we as citizens can begin to have a different kind of conversation about the issues.
The Open Discourse Project is anchored by a belief that the quality of a democracy depends upon the quality of civic engagement, and is achieved through productive deliberation on the issues. Hosted by the Center for Narrative & Conflict Resolution, this year-long project will run alongside the 2016 Presidential Campaign and will work to open political discourse to allow for a higher quality of engagement on the issues. Join us as we explore how dominant storylines constrain our ability to dialogue with those who disagree with us politically, and learn how a narrative approach opens up new possibilities for conversations across the aisle. Through a series of online workshops, discussions, and narrative analysis of campaign rhetoric, the Open Discourse Project will model a robust public sphere for deliberation and showcase the power of citizen engagement.
