The SCAR Student Association

The Student Association (SA) is a student led organization created in an effort to build better relationships among students, staff, and faculty at S-CAR.  The SA advocates on behalf of student concerns to the faculty on issues relevant to S-CAR and assists students in navigating the challenges of life at Mason and in the Washington, DC area.

This site is designed to help new students become oriented with the Student Association.  There are many opportunities to get involved in S-CAR and one of them is through the S-CAR Student Association and we welcome all of you to participate in this group.  The SA plays an important role within the school.  It speaks on behalf of the students and has a real effect on the decision-making process and the culture of S-CAR. However, that effect is only as strong as the involved voices--the more involved cohorts become, the more the program itself is shaped and evolved at all levels.

The SA was preceded by two student organizations (GSCS and ISA). These groups fostered a culture of student empowerment and discussion within the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR). Both played a crucial role in developing the foundations upon which the Student Association is built. With the transition to The School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution a new organization was formed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing program and student body.

The SA is comprised of student volunteers who donate their time and effort. All students enrolled in S-CAR are welcome to participate in the organization. Representatives to specific positions are elected once a year in February and serve a one and a half year term (when possible). SA representatives exist to help students address issues and channel feedback and criticism to in productive directions.  Each incoming cohort brings something unique and dynamic to the process, and we look forward to seeing what this year brings. Please consider collaborating with the SA!

Those interested in working with the SA or who have a concern they would like addressed should contact us in person (we are very approachable people) or via our email at [email protected]. Emails will be directed to the representative(s) best suited to address the content of the correspondence.  Additionally, the SA holds regular meetings. All S-CAR students are welcomed to attend. Due to the hectic nature of S-CAR life our meeting times do fluctuate so please contact us for meeting time and place. The Student Association also puts on regular open forums where students are encouraged to come learn more about the SA and share issues and concerns about their experience at S-CAR. Open forum dates are announced through the S-CAR events email and listed in the scar.gmu.edu events area.
