Carol Hamrin

Dr. Carol Lee Hamrin joined George Mason University as a Research Professor for S-CAR and CAPEC in 2000. She is a Chinese affairs consultant and senior associate with the Global China Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.
 
With a Ph.D. in Chinese and comparative world history, and twenty-five years experience as a senior Research Specialist at the Department of State, Carol Hamrin provided a long-term perspective on the remarkable transformation in China under globalization.  Her research focused on social and cultural change, and the implications for U.S.-China relations and China’s role as a global power.  

Dr. Hamrin consults for nonprofit organizations supporting training projects and social services for the development of China’s Third Sector, advises on human rights and religious rights policy issues, and writes on civil society and the pluralization of religion and culture.

Hamrin earned the Secretary of State’s Career Achievement Award in 2000, and received the Center for Public Justice Leadership Award for outstanding public service in 2003. She taught at The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) from 1978 – 1993, contributes to D.C. think tank programs, and has published widely. Her books include Salt and Light: Lives of Faith that Shaped Modern China (vol. 1 and 2); God and Caesar in China: Policy Implications of Church-State Tensions; Decision Making in Deng’s China and China and the Challenge of the Future.
