Biography

April Umminger has spent the majority of her career reporting on conflicts that erupt within communities.  She has an extensive background in both print and interactive media, and spent 14 years working for the Washington Post and USA Today.  Umminger covered some of the biggest news events of the past two decades including the Columbine High School shootings, the World Trade Center terrorist attacks, and inside Norris Hall at Virginia Tech.  Her work in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech shooting helped the Washington Post newsroom with the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news in 2008.  The same year Umminger was awarded a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to Venezuela, where she represented the United States in the town of Merida and at Rotary clubs there.  It was after this experience that Umminger decided to pursue a career in conflict resolution.
