Event Abstract:
Based on 32 semi-structured interviews with academics, representatives of non-government organizations, and government officials in South Korea, the perceptions of the process of reconciliation between South Korea and Japan are explored. The analysis reveals the importance of colonial memory for South Korean national identity and its impact on the assessment of current conflicts between South Korea and Japan. The presentation explores the impact of structural issues, economic, political and international factors, as well as approaches to history in both countries on readiness for reconciliation.
