Recent community conversations about S-CAR's language requirement for doctoral students have highlighted our diverse -- and sometimes ambivalent -- relationships to regional expertise/area studies/ local linguistic and cultural knowledge. Please join us as we unpack some of the broader issues at stake in this debate. We will be discussing: what is the role of "locality" in conflict analysis and resolution? Should analysts and practitioners be equipped with a deep understanding of context? Or should we be training students in a way of seeing, or a set of modular practices, applicable across conflict settings?
