Andrea Bartoli, Director of the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR) was invited by the United Nations to participate in an informal interactive dialogue during a meeting of the full UN General Assembly.

The invitation to speak came from Edward Luck, the special adviser on the UN’s Responsibility to Protect initiative which promotes the international community’s responsibility to prevent and stop genocides, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.

Bartoli spoke about initiatives and approaches of various countries regarding genocide prevention and discussed his work with Engaging Governments on Genocide Prevention, a training program that involves UN member government officials in genocide prevention methods and involves the participants in a genocide prevention network.

“The experience of addressing the UN General Assembly was tremendous,” said Bartoli. “I am encouraged that the UN member states were engaged in a constructive exploration about the issue of genocide prevention and that our program is contributing to the emergence of actual policy options.”
