On Friday, October 7th more than one hundred youth and adults marched in a three block police escorted procession from MLK, Jr. Recreation Center to Wayland Temple Baptist Church, 25th and Cecil B. Moore Avenue to start the North Philadelphia Youth Peace Olympics sponsored by Building Respect in Community (BRIC). Youth from North and South Philly participated in the three day Olympics which included basketball, soccer and track. Berean Institute, MLK, Jr., and C.B. Moore Recreation Centers hosted the sports events. Participants were from Athletic and Hancock Rec. Centers, Young Stars, Wayland Temple basketball teams, International Soccer League of South Philadelphia, and other youth from the community.

Wayland Temple hosted the opening ceremony where youth received messages, and music on peace, non-violence and sportsmanship, and the closing ceremony where participants received trophies and medals. Before each event youth recited and agreed to a commitment to: be non-violent and peaceful, do my best, care for my mind, body and spirit, stay focused and purposeful, honor and my respect self, teammates, coaches, opponents and community, and to carry the spirit of the olympics with them. A surprise visit by former 76er Sam Dalembert gave a tremendous boost to BRIC members who worked diligently for one year planning the event.

BRIC was founded six years ago as a Wayland Temple com-munity organization promoting spiritual, education and recreation activities with a focus on respect, peace, and nonviolence.
