Diamond: Facing the challenge of peace
Abstract
The African continent has a huge deposit of natural resources which are sources of blessing to some nations and a curse to others. In countries such a Botswana, diamonds are an effective catalyst for development as extraction is managed responsibly and the revenue generated used for the wellbeing of the people. However, in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Angola in the past and in DRC a present, diamonds have been termed "conflict diamonds" or "blood diamonds". This article explores whether it is time to move away from the negative stereotypes attached to diamonds and coin a new label: "peace diamond".
