Abstract
The 16 chapters in this book come from a conference at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London in 1979. Three chapter editor Trapper's introduction concluding pieces by Ernest Gellner and Andrew Strathern are general in coverage. The remaining papers are case studies fairly evenly divided between the Iran and Afghanistan. Almost all the latter deal with Pakthun (Pushtun/Pathan) groups.
