Abstract

The history of United Nations peace-keeping operations represents a diverse range of experiences, encompassing forty-one missions from the UN truce Supervision Organization initiated in 1948 in the Middle East to the UN Mission of Observers in Prevlaka (Croatia), started in January 1996. In each case, the United Nations tried to use international troops to assist in maintaining peace. Some operations were relatively simple, such as the fifteen-person UN Aouzou Strip Observations Group that spent a few weeks and $64,471 watching the Libyans withdraw from northern Chad.
