The university community is invited to a brown bag lecture by Ambassador John W. McDonald tomorrow from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR), Room A401, 4260 Chain Bridge Road. McDonald was 1992 Distinguished ICAR Professor and has been an ICAR Advisory Board member since 1985. He is the cofounder and chairman of the Institute of Multi-Track Diplomacy (IMTD), which focuses on national and international ethnic conflicts. “Ethnic Conflict in Today’s World: What Can We Do about It?” will explore three theories on why many parts of the world are engulfed in intrastate conflict. McDonald will describe what the IMTD is trying to do about the problem, focusing specifically on Cyprus, Liberia, Bosnia, Kashmir, and Nepal. A lawyer, former international civil servant, development expert, and peace builder, McDonald has written eight books on conflict resolution. He spent 20 years of his career in Western Europe and the Middle East and worked for 16 years on United Nations economic and social affairs. He retired from the Foreign Service in 1987 after 40 years as a diplomat. The program is part of ICAR’s series of informal lectures on research and practice of conflict resolution.
